We've launched our franchise and it is attracting interest already, mainly from forum postings being spotted.

The franchise is www.shadeline.co.uk and is open to anyone over 18, male, female or couples as this could be done by all. Shadeline is a window blinds business. The total investment is just under £5000 and should be re-couped within four months.

We know that a lot of people have recently become the victim of the recession and this is a genuine answer for many. I've been on the receiving end of unemployment as an 'over 40' and I know how hard it is to find 'a job'. Working for yourself is the best feeling in the world.

The British Franchise Association says that 90% of franchises are still 'in business' after 5 years. The usual failure rate for new businesses is that after 5 years, 4 out of 5 have folded!

Franchises work, and this one is better than most. Check it out for yourself at www.shadeline.co.uk and see. If not for you, maybe you can give some hope to a friend or acquaintance.

I have an opinion regarding the future of holidays, in light of the recession which is likely to be with us for the next five years.

I think that more people will be looking at taking holidays in the UK, partly due to the cost of fuel, which in turn affects airlines. I also have noticed that temperatures in the UK have risen. OK, so we still get enough rain but we are getting longer periods of higher temperatures which makes it nicer for sightseeing and relaxing. With more awareness of skin cancer, fewer people want to lay on a beach getting a tan.

Source: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=368

I am looking at one particular area of uk holidays...self-catering boating holidays for couples, and for families.

With congested roads and noisy hotel guests, boating holidays can be very relaxing, but do not appeal to everyone.

I am talking about river cruisers and narrowboats. If you could hire a cruiser/narrowboat kitted out with fridge,tv and dvd, toilet, shower, etc. for an all inclusive cost of £500 for a week (friday to friday), how likely would you be to try it? Very likely / maybe / not at all ?

I would appreciate your answer, either a simple choice of one of the three possibilities, or a more rounded reply, if you prefer. Thanks.

I missed the beginning but what I did see made me sad. I guess some of you know that I also run a diet website at www.lowcarbjohn.co.uk but these women weren't dieting...they were starving. It was quite clear that one of these reporters was having some serious mental health issues associated with what they were doing. I'm obviously in favour of people losing weight to become healthier and happier, but I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve. Both ladies were totally miserable. The weight they reached wasn't viable for long term, and the health implications were very worrying.
I know some people are against low-carb, but I believe it is because they have just accepted old information. Check out my website for why that info is not accurate. Women in particular, please, the majority of men would agree that they prefer their ladies to be fit...but not skinny. Rant over.

It concerns a link between ADHD and eating foods that are high in carbohydrates.

I have just read a news report on AOL that talks about high blood pressure and the brain. The link to that story is here: http://news.aol.co.uk/brain-cause-of-high-blood-pressure/article/20070414200809990027

Now that isn’t such a big surprise to me. You see, on my free diet website at www.lowcarbjohn.co.uk there are links to various bits of information.

One of which is that doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital are using a type of low carb diet to treat children with seizures.

They have had some amazing results. An obvious hint to a link between the brain and carbohydrates. Similar reports are surfacing with relation to carbohydrates and alzheimers.

So, since the 1980’s we have been brainwashed into thinking that we should be eating low fat foods. The problem is, that if you look at the info label on low-fat items, it’s nearly always high in carbs! Since the mid-eighties, there has been an undeniable increase in ADHD, requiring medication for control.

I believe that the answer has been in front of us all along, it’s the carbohydrates.

I have been since I was in my teens, although I kinda lost interest in football until my daughter started playing as goalie for our town's youth team.

As a business person, I cannot understand why the rumours of discontent at Stamford Bridge are left unresolved. Roman Abramovitch is an extremely rich man ( billionaire plus). He brought in Jose Mourinho to create success, and that is what he has done. Chelsea has gained many 'new' fans due to the manager because, like him or not, he is charismatic. I cannot understand why someone as successful as Mr. Abramovitch is willing to let the situation continue.

The ongoing rumours that Jose will leave...or not, are unproductive to the club, and it's fans. Forget the money (it's hard, I know!) but for people like Abramovitch, it's about 'winning', and if Jose is the man for the job, which he obviously is, then why let this unrest carry on? Eventually, it will all end in tears!

It just doesn't make sense from a business / man-management point of view.

When I was seventeen, the average person would take ten or twelve driving lessons and be more or less ready for their test. O.K., so some passed and some failed but that's normal, just like it is today.

Now learners are told (by the DSA) that they need around 40 lessons with an instructor PLUS plenty of private practice before they take their first test attempt.

Were we smarter back then?
Were the cars easier to drive?
Were the examiners 'nicer'(definitely not!)

So there's more traffic, granted. But if you pick a quiet day (and us instructors know when those are) there is no reason that someone should be taking so long.

It's no wonder that some parents think we are ripping them off!

Maybe they should be in the car when their little darlings have to be told the same things over and over again. You need to look in your rear-view mirror when slowing down. Is it really that hard to understand?

Once you have passed your test, you are responsible for yourself AND your passengers. If you slow down at a junction and the spanish lorry driver coming up behind is busy looking at his map and hasn't noticed your little Vauxhall Corsa sitting last in line at a junction...goodbye rear-seat passengers.

So is it down to computer games? Has everything gone 'virtual'? If you crash your scooby whilst playing 'Need for Speed', then no-one dies. Well listen up kids, life ain't like that.

I had a run of lads last year. They all passed first time, all with only a few minor faults, and all of them wrote off their car within two weeks of passing their test.

I even had a double. Two of them were mates and when one did a handbrake turn, the other couldn't stop in time and t-boned him. I certainly didn't teach 'em that!

At least no-one has died, yet. I guess it will happen sometime. It's hard though. We've all been there. I was the same. Not long after passing my test in 1977 (was it really that long ago?) I remember taking a mate for a spin in my mark 2 Cortina. Went through town and really gave it some. Round the corner and we were up on two wheels, about two feet above ground! When we got back to the cafe, Mike was busy creating my 'legend' status. In truth, I had been crapping my pants...but I wasn't letting anyone else know.

You know another thing that's bugging me? Foreigners! Now I'm not racist so don't get on that Shilpa trip with me but...it iritates me to see so many of them driving over here when it's obvious that they shouldn't be behind the wheel.

Take Thailand, for instance. The driving test consists of once around a field, in first gear if you like, then stop and collect your licence. Then come to Britain and drive 'legally' for twelve months totally unsupervised.

Then there's the drink-drive problem.

Every week, my local free paper carries the 'court report' and it's full of people called czxyrvitch or something like that, caught driving when they're three or four times over the legal drink limit.

Hell, I can't stand up after that much J.D., never mind pilot a car around the streets. Still, maybe they can't either, so they drive home. I mean, I'm all in favour of people trying for a better life, and if I was in their shoes, I'd be over here too. No problem, but I'm damn sure that if I went to Moscow and went out of my way to flout the laws, I wouldn't be still walking down the streets drinking from a can of Stella at eight in the morning and pissing up shop windows.

Bloody good job I'm a driving instructor and blessed with an abundance of self-control and patience, or I might just be a little 'miffed'
